Army - recruiting soldiers

In Army window you can recruit army for gold and/or mana (depending on unit). Each race has 3 units - defensive, attack and magical.
Magical units are most expensive to recruit and have high upkeep (paid each turn), but they allow spellcasting and produce mana. Because of the cost, they are often recruited in low numbers, just to give enough spell power for spellcasting, and in lands that are (more or less) safe.

You pay the upkeep whenever you play a turn, therefore it is best to recruit army after you have played all turns you want to play that day. However, when you need to recruit an army, don't hesitate to recruit large number of soldiers. A few of them will just cost you money on upkeep, and won't help much with neither defense nor attacks.

What is total strength of land?

Total strength of land is displayed with each land in the basic info-window you see when you click on a land on map, and also as mouse-tip (just point your mouse on the land and wait a second). Total strength of land is also shown on map with tiny sword icons - see table.

Total strength of land is a sum of defense and attack of army in that land.
You know the total strength of land (from last recalculation, not current!), but you don't know the proportions of units of each type.
Therefore, with total strength 100 sometimes defense can be 50, and sometimes 80 (rest is attack). That depends on the race and recruited units. Also, there can be some defensive buildings in the land, and against conquest the (unknown) population will defend as well.

Soldiers are recruited from population

If you plan to recruit soldiers, follow the "For recruitment" number. It tells you how many sodiers you can currently recruit in this land. Soldiers are recruited from population - the more people are living in the land, the more soldiers you can recruit there. But you can't recruit all inhabitants into your army, at least 20% have to stay in their houses. Mind you, these 20% are calculated from number of houses (including empty houses), that means if you buy some houses and they remain empty, you can recruit less soldiers than you could without these houses!

Army costs

To train higher level units (attack and magical), you need to build the respective building in the land - War Guild or Mage Guild.

Enter the number of units you want to recruit or disband, and click the appropriate button below. When recruiting, you must have the required resources (gold and/or mana)! These resources are subtracted from your treasury immediately when units are recruited.

As soon as you have recruited soldiers, you start paying upkeep each turn. Disband soldiers you don't need anymore, or move them to another land where they can be of some use.

Unit parameters

Each military unit has these parameters:
  • Price in gold - paid when recruiting
  • Price in mana - paid when recruiting
  • Upkeep - paid each turn automatically from your income
  • Attack - used when attacking
  • Defense - used when defending
Magical units (3rd level units) additionally produce mana (+1 mana per turn), increase spell power and magical defense of the land .
